New Cloud Study 2013– Growth Despite Concerns

A recent study by KPMG International found that one half of 650 respondents said they had already moved some of their business processes to the cloud. Two main reasons were that it made it easier to enter new markets and that it drove process transformation. However, a full one third of businesses found the cost of moving to the cloud to be too expensive due to unexpected changes required to their IT systems.

Security as Always, an Issue

As always, security was a big issue, with one quarter of the companies thinking it was just too big to overcome. Not unexpectedly, the main concern was risk of intellectual property theft and data loss and privacy concerns. Still, Greg Bell from KPMG said “Functions that until recently were considered too sensitive or complex for cloud are now being put on the table.” This shows the growing confidence in the cloud and a willingness to work through security issues.

The Biggest Challenges for Companies

Cloud implementation and integration costs being too high were one of the top issues at 33%. Concerns about ROI were also a factor, as in some instances companies underestimated the costs involved before entering a project.

Choosing your Path and Working Together

When choosing your applications and systems for your first or even third cloud foray, consider the following:

• Clearly define the problem you’re trying to solve.
• Get both business owners and the IT division to buy-in.
• Consult legal, international divisions and partners if they will be affected.
• Consider your industry compliance & privacy issues.
• Estimate how much your project will cost and the ROI expectations.
